Kindergarten Teacher
Grayson Mogel
Before joining St. Andrew’s, Grayson worked as a preschool teacher for two years and spent five years as a nanny for two families, developing a strong foundation in early childhood care and education.
Grayson was drawn to St. Andrew’s for its commitment to nurturing children as both students and individuals. He values the school’s whole-child approach and is excited to support the social and emotional growth of his students alongside their academic development.
Outside of the classroom, Grayson enjoys watching movies, playing and watching basketball, and relaxing with video games or card games.
First Grade Teacher
Ally Kapasakis
Ally brings a wide range of experience working with young learners, having previously taught Kindergarten in Chesterfield County, art classes at her friend’s school, preschool at an outdoor nature-based school, and even gym classes for toddlers! She also served for many years as the Activities Director at Camp Chanco.
Ally earned her BFA in Creative Writing with a Certificate in Publishing from UNC Wilmington. She was drawn to St. Andrew’s because of its strong sense of community and deep commitment to social-emotional learning. A passionate advocate for independent schools, Ally is thrilled to be teaching 1st grade and connecting with her students.
Outside of the classroom, she enjoys paddleboarding, going to the movies, and spending time outdoors.
SECOND GRADE TEACHER
Dalton Singer
Dalton has wanted to be a teacher since second grade, making it especially meaningful for him to step into the role of 2nd Grade Teacher. For the past three years, he has worked with K–5 students in Hanover County and has developed a deep appreciation for the educators and students who make a difference in their communities every day.
Dalton is drawn to St. Andrew’s School because of its inclusive, whole-child approach to education, which closely aligns with his values and purpose as an educator. His goal is to create an inclusive learning environment where students are nurtured, uplifted, and encouraged to take pride in their community.
Outside of the classroom, Dalton enjoys exploring new places, trying new foods, catching a movie at Bow Tie Cinemas, and spending time with friends and family.
Third Grade Teacher
Douglas Powell
Douglas Powell has worked in education since 2011 and is excited to return to the classroom as part of the St. Andrew’s family. Outside of school, he enjoys spending time with his three children, writing, and performing. A spoken-word artist for more than 20 years, Douglas has published four collections, appeared in numerous anthologies, and serves as Executive Director of The Writer’s Den. He also hosts poetry slams, open mics, and other literary events, fostering creativity and community through the arts.
Fourth Grade Teacher
George Frowert
Mr. Frowert brings over 30 years of experience in elementary special education, having taught in New Kent, Henrico, and Hanover County Public Schools. He holds a B.A. in English and a Master’s in Teaching (Special Education), both from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Mr. Frowert is passionate about helping all children succeed and finds great joy in watching his students grow academically. Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, he is a proud father of two young adults. He and his wife recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in Paris and are looking forward to their eldest son’s wedding in the summer of 2026.
Fifth Grade Teacher
MaSheta Ellison
MaSheta has taught fifth grade at St. Andrew’s School since 2007, and she loves that St. Andrew’s allows her to provide engaging hands-on lessons and positive real life experiences that help shape the whole student. She received a B.A. in English/Secondary Education from VUU, a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Averett University, and a Master’s in Teaching and Learning English from Liberty University. Before coming to St. Andrew’s, she taught for six years. MaSheta is a native of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and attended North Accomack Elementary School. She lives with her husband, two children, and their dog, Chase. Fun fact: She practices old cheerleading routines from high school for fun.
Director of Performing Arts
Maddie Erskine
Maddie became the Music Teacher in 2018. She came to St. Andrew’s School because of the unique music program and the mission to educate the whole child. Maddie attended Mantua Elementary in Fairfax, VA, and she earned a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Music Education/Instrumental from VCU. Maddie has a cat named Willow and loves to swim, learn new instruments, and travel.
Art Teacher
Chris Milk Hulburt
Chris became the art teacher in 2018, after becoming fascinated by the magic of St. Andrew’s during a tour. He has spent the previous 20 years as a professional artist, showing in galleries all around the United States and creating murals around Richmond. He lives two blocks from the school with his wonderful wife, Jenny Beth, his daughter, and two cats, Sodapop and Grizzly Bear.
Librarian
Jen Russo
Jen came to St. Andrew’s School in 2014 as the school librarian. She was a school librarian for five years before joining SAS and worked in a children’s bookstore for five years. She received a B.A. from JMU and a M. Library Science from the University of Maryland. Jen is from Columbia, MD, and attended Bryant Woods Elementary School. She lives with her husband, son and daughter, and a Chocolate Lab named Lea. Fun fact: She likes to dye her hair purple.
Jen believes fate found St. Andrew’s for her. She was ready to return to work after staying home with her children when the St. Andrew’s position opened up and turned out to be a perfect fit.
P.E. Teacher and Operations Coordinator
Carl Tabb
Carl returned in 2021 to St. Andrew’s School as the P.E. Teacher, and in his role is excited to again work with students and help them develop fundamental skills through having fun and physical activity. Carl took a two-year hiatus from St. Andrew’s School to work in the Chesterfield Police Department as a Police Service Aide. Previously, he worked at the school for five years as the P.E. Teacher. Before St. Andrew’s, Carl worked at Fit4Kids, the Boys & Girls Club, and the YMCA.
In his spare time, Carl enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.
Spanish Teacher
Bobby Fleiss
Bobby came to St. Andrew’s School in 2022 and is excited to share his love of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Originally from the Boston area, he recently moved to Richmond from Austin, TX, where he taught elementary school for ten years.
Bobby received his B.A. from Colby College in Waterville, Maine and has lived and studied in Latin American countries including Ecuador, Nicaragua, Panama, and Mexico.
Bobby stays busy chasing his 4 and 6 year old, enjoys the outdoors, and is a big sports fan. He and his wife Abby couldn’t be happier calling RVA home.
STEAM Teacher
Jaime Brookman
With over 25 years of experience in education, our STEAM teacher has taught students from PreK through adults in subjects ranging from STEM and math to history and English. She has worked in Richmond City, Henrico, and Hanover schools, and even spent time teaching in Morocco through a Fulbright Fellowship. She has presented at conferences across the country and holds advanced training in STEM leadership and mathematics. Drawn to St. Andrew’s for its strong sense of community and commitment to high standards, she loves creating integrated STEM lessons that challenge and inspire students. Outside of school, she enjoys traveling, learning new things, and spending time with her husband, daughter, and their four cats—Harlequin, Lincoln, Magellan, and Theodore.
School Counselor
Phyllis Edwards
With a dynamic career spanning teaching, counseling, and leadership, Phyllis Edwards brings a deep passion for education, student well-being, and community engagement to every role. A proud graduate of the University of Richmond, Phyllis Edwards earned a double major in Spanish and Sociology, with a minor in English, and went on to complete a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in College Student Personnel Administration from James Madison University.
Phyllis Edwards began her educational journey as a Residential Life Counselor and Coordinator at Seton Hall University. After serving at the college level, she became a dedicated Spanish and English teacher, earning the prestigious honor of Teacher of the Year in two different school systems across Sussex County and Hopewell City Public Schools and she was Middle School Teacher of the Year for Chesterfield County Public Schools. Her love for working directly with students led her to become a school counselor, where she expanded her impact by serving as the Youth Development Coordinator Coordinator for PreK-12 School Counseling and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) for Manassas City Public Schools.
A committed advocate for professional development and mentorship, Phyllis Edwards served on the Virginia School Counselor Association (VSCA) Board for ten years, including as the Mentoring Coordinator. For 14 years, she has shared her knowledge and enthusiasm by presenting at numerous VSCA conferences, including the honor of being a Pre-Conference Speaker and featured presenter at both the Summer and Spring Academies.
Her work at Chatham Hall as Director of Counseling Services reignited her calling to serve within a faith-based educational setting, further enriching her approach to student support. Most recently, she served as a Mental Health Counselor and Well-Being Services Specialist at All Cares, LLC, where she provided direct mental health services and holistic wellness support.
Now thrilled to join the community at St. Andrew’s, Phyllis Edwards looks forward to getting to know the Otters and their families while continuing to inspire, lead, and serve. Beyond her professional life, she is a lifelong learner and traveler who studied abroad at the University of Salamanca in Spain and completed a graduate internship at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also an enthusiastic fan of tennis, reading, learning, traveling, Kermit the Frog, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Boston Red Sox.
Reading and Math Resource Teacher
Mary Ohmer
Mary joined St. Andrew’s School in 2022, and is grateful to be a part of the school and its mission to nurture the whole child: academically, creatively, and spiritually. She received a B.A from Vanderbilt University, and has recently completed Associate level training in the Orton Gillingham Approach to Literacy Instruction. Mary has spent 13 years as a teacher in grades 3 through 5, and is excited to continue this next chapter in her teaching career as a reading and math resource teacher.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hiking, exploring RVA with her husband, and spending time with their three “grown & flown” adult children and granddaughter whenever possible!
