Alumni Spotlight: Lawrence

St. Andrew’s School (SAS) has been in operation for almost 130 years. It was founded to give Oregon Hill neighborhood children access to high-quality education. SAS still provides this today.

To date, hundreds of students have gone through the SAS’ whole child programming, and many graduates have gone on to attend independent middle schools. Students like Lawrence.

Lawrence, currently a sophomore at Old Dominion University, graduated from St. Andrew’s School in 2015. He attended Good Shepherd and Richmond Christian before enrolling at Old Dominion University.

“St. Andrew’s makes it really easy to work hard, and work toward your goals,” Lawrence says. “I learned how to hold myself accountable for things, like how to be on time and take responsibility.”

It was through St. Andrew’s that Lawrence was introduced to YMCA Camp Silver Beach. St. Andrew’s provides support for students interested in attending summer camp. Today, Lawrence is a camp counselor at Camp Silver Beach. After attending this camp for several years, he went through their Leadership Development

program.

“St. Andrew’s is a good school. It’s kind of like a big family,” he says. “My little brother (Xavier) goes there now. He’s in third grade,” Lawrence says. “He told me he saw my name up on the wall for an award that I received, so that was pretty great.”
