Kindergarten Teacher
Isabella Bailey
Isabella came to St. Andrew’s School as a Second Grade Teacher in 2022, and is thrilled to be a part of such a loving and enriching community as she begins her teaching career. She obtained her B.A. in Elementary Education at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she completed her student teaching in a 2nd Grade classroom at Sidwell Friends Lower School.
In her free time, she enjoys going on hikes and bike rides with her friends while spending time in nature. She loves to play her flute, and has played since she was in elementary school.
First Grade Teacher
Courtney Phillips
Courtney came to St. Andrew’s School in 2022 and is excited to cultivate a warm and loving environment where students feel safe and learn to use their voice to advocate for themselves. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Mary Baldwin University and has worked in education for 18 years, primarily in Exceptional Education as a teacher and instructional assistant.
In her spare time, Courtney enjoys reading, spending time with her husband and two children, and decorating for holidays.
Second Grade Teacher
Lesly Soto-Torres
Lesly came to St. Andrew’s School during the 2022-2023 school year, and is excited about being a part of the school’s holistic approach to education! She is currently finishing her B.S. in interior design, with a minor in Spanish. Les has been working in RPS since 2021, and her background is in ESL teaching English to newcomers in grades K-5, as well as math intervention in grades 6-8.
Lesly is looking forward to helping students at St. Andrews grow with Grace! In her spare time, Lesly can be found reading, painting, and hanging out with her cat Michael.
Third Grade Teacher
Rebecca Hovingh
Rebecca joined St. Andrew’s in 2022, and is very excited to be a part of a community that supports the development of the whole child and encourages meaningful learning experiences!
Rebecca has a B.S. in Food Science and a Bachelor of Education degree, and has taught in preschools and elementary schools in France, Canada, and the United States.
Rebecca has loved reading since her own school days and hopes to share her passion for books with her students. As a new resident of Richmond, she is also looking forward to exploring the city – and, of course, discovering new bookstores!
Fourth Grade Teacher
André Kersey
André came to St. Andrew’s school in 2024, drawn by the three words he likes to use to describe the school: Excellent, meticulous, and inspiring. He is excited to assist young people achieve their dreams and aspirations. André attended Morgan State University, where he majored in English Literature & Language. He received a BA in Theology from Andersonville Theological Seminary, and is currently pursuing his Master’s in Theological Studies from Regent University
In addition to his educational background, André began his career as a soldier in the Virginia Army National Guard, and has experience as a community organizer for various non-profit organizations. Furthermore, he has served as a pastor and minister in multiple churches, as well as a K-12 educator in Greater Richmond.
In his spare time, André can be found engaging in his various hobbies, including chess, boxing, creative writing, and video games.
Fifth Grade Teacher
MaSheta Ellison
MaSheta has taught fifth grade at St. Andrew’s School since 2007, and she loves that St. Andrew’s allows her to provide engaging hands-on lessons and positive real life experiences that help shape the whole student. She received a B.A. in English/Secondary Education from VUU, a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Averett University, and a Master’s in Teaching and Learning English from Liberty University. Before coming to St. Andrew’s, she taught for six years. MaSheta is a native of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and attended North Accomack Elementary School. She lives with her husband, two children, and their dog, Chase. Fun fact: She practices old cheerleading routines from high school for fun.
Director of Performing Arts
Maddie Erskine
Maddie became the Music Teacher in 2018. She came to St. Andrew’s School because of the unique music program and the mission to educate the whole child. Maddie attended Mantua Elementary in Fairfax, VA, and she earned a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Music Education/Instrumental from VCU. Maddie has a cat named Willow and loves to swim, learn new instruments, and travel.
Art Teacher
Chris Milk Hulburt
Chris became the art teacher in 2018, after becoming fascinated by the magic of St. Andrew’s during a tour. He has spent the previous 20 years as a professional artist, showing in galleries all around the United States and creating murals around Richmond. He lives two blocks from the school with his wonderful wife, Jenny Beth, his daughter, and two cats, Sodapop and Grizzly Bear.
STEAM Teacher
Emily Bailey
Emily joined St. Andrew’s School in 2023, and was drawn to the school because of her belief in intentional education taught in a vibrant atmosphere where equity is centered and students are prioritized. Emily graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Theology in 2013, and received her Teaching Certificate in early 2022. In May of 2023, she graduated from Louisiana State University at Shreveport with a Masters of Education in Curriculum Design & Instruction. She has a background in working with students in grades Pk4-8th, running Service Learning Workshops and teaching various subjects, as well as working with scholars in 5-7th grade teaching ELA & Social Studies.
Emily is an avid foodie, and in her spare time, loves to obsess over competition cooking shows. She and her husband recently expanded their family with the birth of their beautiful and curious baby, Isaiah (Izzy), who is keeping them on their toes!
Librarian
Jen Russo
Jen came to St. Andrew’s School in 2014 as the school librarian. She was a school librarian for five years before joining SAS and worked in a children’s bookstore for five years. She received a B.A. from JMU and a M. Library Science from the University of Maryland. Jen is from Columbia, MD, and attended Bryant Woods Elementary School. She lives with her husband, son and daughter, and a Chocolate Lab named Lea. Fun fact: She likes to dye her hair purple.
Jen believes fate found St. Andrew’s for her. She was ready to return to work after staying home with her children when the St. Andrew’s position opened up and turned out to be a perfect fit.
P.E. Teacher
Carl Tabb
Carl returned in 2021 to St. Andrew’s School as the P.E. Teacher, and in his role is excited to again work with students and help them develop fundamental skills through having fun and physical activity. Carl took a two-year hiatus from St. Andrew’s School to work in the Chesterfield Police Department as a Police Service Aide. Previously, he worked at the school for five years as the P.E. Teacher. Before St. Andrew’s, Carl worked at Fit4Kids, the Boys & Girls Club, and the YMCA.
In his spare time, Carl enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.
Spanish Teacher
Bobby Fleiss
Bobby came to St. Andrew’s School in 2022 and is excited to share his love of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Originally from the Boston area, he recently moved to Richmond from Austin, TX, where he taught elementary school for ten years.
Bobby received his B.A. from Colby College in Waterville, Maine and has lived and studied in Latin American countries including Ecuador, Nicaragua, Panama, and Mexico.
Bobby stays busy chasing his 4 and 6 year old, enjoys the outdoors, and is a big sports fan. He and his wife Abby couldn’t be happier calling RVA home.
Reading and Math Resource Teacher
Mary Ohmer
Mary joined St. Andrew’s School in 2022, and is grateful to be a part of the school and its mission to nurture the whole child: academically, creatively, and spiritually. She received a B.A from Vanderbilt University, and has recently completed Associate level training in the Orton Gillingham Approach to Literacy Instruction. Mary has spent 13 years as a teacher in grades 3 through 5, and is excited to continue this next chapter in her teaching career as a reading and math resource teacher.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hiking, exploring RVA with her husband, and spending time with their three “grown & flown” adult children and granddaughter whenever possible!
