Volunteer Spotlight: Rachel O’Brien

Rachel O’Brien says she likes volunteering at St. Andrew’s School (SAS) because it’s fun to work with all of the families.

In her second year as a volunteer, O’Brien is responsible for coordinating all of the summer camps that SAS students attend.

“I get to work with children across grade levels, help find opportunities for them, and I’m able to advertise really spectacular camps. It’s a fun role to be in,” she says.

O’Brien says her background in education research and a desire to volunteer is the perfect combination to excel in her role.

“I work with the summer camps to coordinate scholarship opportunities, communicate with families, and help register students,” she says. “I take a vested interest in students’ lives with their families as partners.”

All of the summer camps are located in Virginia, but range from day camps to overnight camps, and are available to children of all ages. There are art-based camps, coding-based camps, and outdoor camps – O’Brien helps find a wide variety of camps that appeal to different schedules and interests.

“I love being a part of the dedicated teachers and support staff who meet all of the needs of their students,” she says.
